Scentwork is where we train our dogs to detect a specific scent and they are rewarded when they find it. Using a mixture of rewards (food and toys), we teach our dog to indicate when they find the select odour. One our dog has the skills to indicate on the odour, we gradually increase the difficulty where the scent is hidden in discreet places. The dog is then asked to search for the scent, using their natural sense of smell. As your dog progresses, they will soon be able to complete blind searches where the owner does not know where the scent is hidden. Both dog and owner need to work together using their new skills to detect the hidden scent.
